Microdermabrasion is performed by polishing selected areas with a hand piece, which emits crystals onto the surface of the skin. It is a relatively gentle and short procedure, taking from
30 minutes to an hour. To maximize results it is common to perform the treatment several times. The period between each treatment is generally 2 to 3 weeks. To achieve a permanent change, occasional repeat treatments are recommended. It is also possible to combine microdermabrasion with other treatments, for example chemical peels.

One of the reasons microdermabrasion has become very popular, is the fact that it is a safe, non-surgical procedure, that still produces significant benefits. As long as it is performed by a qualified provider the risks of adverse side effects are minimal, at most it can be mentioned that after microdermabrasion some people experience slight skin irritation.
