Sleepy Dentist Talking about Toothache Causes and Treatments
Causes of Toothache: Not Irrelevant
It's important that you understand the things that can result in a toothache before you go looking for a home remedy. There are many things that can cause a toothache, most of these things, people don't know about.
We all know about broken or chipped teeth and of course, cavities. But there are other causes. If you want a remedy that works, you have to know what's causing the pain. Toothache can result from Sinus issues. They can be brought on by migraines. They can be the result of TMJ.
Even excess stress can result in toothache.
For the purpose of this page, I will assume that your toothache is being caused by a cavity and that it is for that condition you are looking for help. Most people will get a cavity in their teeth at least once in their lifetime. When the outer coating of a tooth, known as the enamel, has been eaten away by acids, the resulting hole is called a cavity. But it doesn't stop there. The cavity will get deeper until it gets to the nerve endings inside the tooth. This hurts!
Toothache Relief: Traditional and Not-So-Traditional Remedies
Now that you know the basics, you can start looking for what that will help to lessen the pain.
There are a lot of suggestions out there, but here I will only list a few of the most popular and well known. These home remedies are meant to provide only temporary toothache relief. They are meant to hold you over, for the time it takes you to get to the dentist for a lasting treatment.
Ok, so my main suggestion will be pretty boring, but I believe this method to be true and tested. To help relieve the pain take an aspirin or two every three to four hours. Aspirin tastes terrible so you won't want to apply it directly onto the gums. Aspirin can also cause a burning sensation, which is unpleasant.
More interesting home remedies? You got it! Native Americans used the
bark of the butternut tree for Toothache Pain. Of course, being the
bark of a tree, you should check for insects and other critters and
remove them before using. Ask your dentist about this treatment
before you use it (or, preferably, don't use it, period).
You could swish with warm salt water.
If you have "the touch", gently massage the gums to block the pain signals from the nerves, since this will result in the nerves being occupied by transporting the sensations of the
massage. Remember to wash your hands before you do this.
Rubbing whiskey on the gums is an old home remedy which eases toothache pain for babies who are teething. This works on adults too. And, as an added benefit, you can use the rest of the bottle next time your team plays, because let's be honest, our team always lose. It's just a fact of life.

Prevention is the Best Remedy of them all
As always prevention and proper care is key! If you see your dentist for regular check ups and take good care of your teeth, you shouldn't get cavities in the first place.
With so many sugary foods available for kids and adults, avoiding getting a cavity is not exactly easy. And it isn't just the sugar that causes problems for your teeth. If you don't take good care of your teeth, you will at some point get a toothache. It takes more than just brushing to keep your teeth healthy. Use mouthwash and remember to floss daily. Brush your teeth at lease twice a day, more often if you need to. Visit your dentist twice a year at the very least.
You've been told all your life; and there is a reason why. Simply put, because it's true!
